Shane slipped over a broken portion of the brick wall and moved through the backyard. He saw someone seated in the living room and two people in the kitchen. Getting this close was dangerous, but he couldnât make himself turn away.
His steps matched the slow, heavy rhythm of his heart as he drew closer to the kitchen. Shane made sure to stay as far to the right as he could so no one would see him.
He hadnât come all this way to be captured. Heâd come to take over his twinâs life and have Shiloh locked away in the institution that had held Shane captive for most of his life.
Shane spun when he heard footsteps. Crap. It was too late to run.
âWhatâre doing out here, Shiloh?â A tall and broad man appeared. Shane had seen this guy in town. What had he been called? Gabriel. Thatâs right.
âThatâs none of your business.â Shane backed toward the house. This was a sticky situation. Yes, yes it was. He didnât want to be forced to kill this man, but he would. Nothing would stand in his way of switching places with his twin.
Gabriel curled his upper lip. âYou need to get back inside.â
Shane squared his shoulders and gave Gabriel a withering glare. âYou have no right to boss me around. I can go where I want.â
âYou can go inside,â Gabriel snapped.
âFuck you, you mangy dog. Iâm the alphaâs mate. You do as I say, not the other way around.â Shane had stayed to the shadows when the big hoopla happened in town, eavesdropping enough to figure out that his twin was the alphaâs mate.
Shane couldnât have asked for a better setup. His shoulder twitched, and he clicked his tongue as his head began to hurt. A slow, throbbing migraine worked its way from the back of his skull toward his temples.
The headaches had been like that when he was youngerâwhen he and Shiloh were still together. Being near one another always caused them both migraines because they amplified each otherâs powers.
Shane forced himself not to rub his temples. âPiss off,â he said. âIâll go back inside in a minute. I just needed fresh air.â
Gabriel glowered at him as he headed toward the kitchen door. âSuit yourself. When something attacks you, donât fucking call me for help.â
Shane flipped him off. As soon as Gabriel closed the door behind him, Shane hurried back over the crumpled section of the wall. That had been too close. Too close indeed. Heâd have to be more careful. He was there to study and observe, not to interact.
Not yet, at least.
